If you are learning Brazilian Portuguese, you have probably wondered: when should I use ser and when should I use estar?

When to Use SER

Use SER for permanent characteristics:

  • Identity: Eu sou Caroline.
  • Nationality: Nos somos brasileiros.
  • Profession: Meu pai e medico.

When to Use ESTAR

Use ESTAR for temporary states or location:

  • Location: Eu estou em casa.
  • Temporary States: Eu estou cansada.

Golden Tip

Can this characteristic change easily?

  • YES = Use ESTAR
  • NO = Use SER
